Top Truck Accessories for East Tennessee Drivers

Driving in East Tennessee asks a lot of a truck. One week you are commuting on I-40, the next you are towing a camper toward the Smokies, hauling mulch, or heading up a gravel road to a cabin. The right accessories make a truck or SUV better at the jobs you actually do.

Here are the upgrades we think make the most sense for drivers in this part of the state, and what to consider with each one.

1. A spray-in bedliner

If you use your bed for anything, from yard work to hauling gear, a spray-in bedliner is one of the most practical upgrades you can make. It bonds to the bed, protects the paint, seals out moisture and gives cargo a grippy surface to rest on. With the rain we get, keeping water from sitting against bare metal matters.

2. A solid towing setup

Boats on the lakes, campers in the mountains, equipment trailers for work: plenty of East Tennessee trucks tow. A proper setup includes the right hitch class, a ball mount that keeps the trailer level, correct wiring and a brake controller for trailers with electric brakes. Mountain grades put extra demands on brakes, so do not skip that piece. Check your owner's manual for your truck's ratings, and plan for tongue weight of roughly 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer on most conventional trailers.

3. All-terrain or hybrid-terrain tires

Factory highway tires are fine on pavement, but they can struggle on wet clay, gravel and leaf-covered back roads. A quality all-terrain or hybrid-terrain tire adds traction for those conditions while staying reasonably comfortable on the highway. Falken's Wildpeak and Nitto's Grappler lines are popular picks. If you want a bigger tire size, plan the wheels, tires and any lift or leveling together.

4. A leveling kit or lift kit

A leveling kit removes the factory rake so the truck sits level and makes room for a modestly larger tire. A lift kit raises the whole truck for more ground clearance and bigger tires. Both change alignment and headlight aim, and lifted trucks may need a drop hitch for towing. Think about how you use the truck before deciding which one fits.

5. LED light bars and auxiliary lighting

Dark, winding back roads, foggy mornings in the hollows and early starts at job sites all make good lighting valuable. LED light bars, pods and ditch lights add visibility for off-road use, and work lights help with loading and job-site tasks. Road-use rules for auxiliary lights vary by state, so check Tennessee law and use high-output lights off-road only where required.

6. Steel bumpers and grilles

A steel bumper adds front-end protection on trails and gives you mounting points for lights and, on many designs, a winch. Brands like ADD Offroad (Addictive Desert Designs) build bumpers for popular trucks. Steel bumpers are heavy, so some owners pair them with suspension upgrades to keep the front end at the right height.

7. Running boards and power steps

Once a truck is lifted or leveled, getting in and out becomes harder for everyone, especially kids and older passengers. Power-deploying steps, like the AMP Research PowerStep line, fold out when the door opens and tuck away when it closes, so they do not hurt ground clearance. Fixed running boards and nerf bars are other options.

8. Suspension support for loads

If your truck squats when you load the bed or hook up a trailer, air springs or other suspension support can help it sit level and ride more comfortably. We carry Air Lift Performance; ask which air suspension options fit your truck and how you use it. Keep in mind that suspension upgrades do not raise your payload or tow rating.

9. Commercial upfits for work trucks

For contractors and tradespeople, the most valuable accessory may be an organized work setup: van shelving, ladder racks, service bodies or flatbeds. Brands like Adrian Steel, Ranger Design, Reading and CM build equipment designed for vocational use.

How to prioritize

If you are not sure where to start, rank upgrades by how they serve your daily use:

  • Protection first: a bedliner protects your investment from day one.
  • Safety next: towing gear, good tires and lighting where appropriate.
  • Capability and style: lifts, bumpers and steps once the basics are covered.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most useful truck accessory?

For most owners who use the bed, a spray-in bedliner offers the most everyday value. Towing gear and better tires are close behind for drivers who tow or leave pavement.

Are LED light bars legal in Tennessee?

Rules on auxiliary lighting vary by state and by how the lights are used. Check current Tennessee law and use high-output off-road lights only off-road where required.

Do I need running boards after a lift?

Many owners add them because a lift makes the truck harder to climb into. Power steps deploy when the door opens and tuck away for ground clearance.
